HGTV, LA and Dining Room Tables

I've been watching a lot of HGTV since coming to LA. My favorite shows are House Hunters and House Hunters International. There's also another show I like to watch called For Rent, but only because it makes me angry.

When it comes to apartments/homes, I think living in New York for the past eleven years has made me bitter because there was this whiny broad on For Rent a few nights ago who was looking at a huge place—A HUGE PLACE—and was like, "There's no place for a dining room table..."

B*TCH, YOU'RE LUCKY TO GET A KITCHEN IN NEW YORK.

I hated her.

Now there's some stupid lady on House Hunters who wants a townhouse with a fireplace that she can turn on with a light switch. IT HAS TO BE A LIGHT SWITCH because she doesn't want to bend down and flip a switch on the floor.

WHO DO THESE PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE?

Anyway, I know my LA update is WAY overdue (and truth be told I wrote a long one last week but for some reason it didn't save so I lost the whole thing and I was so angry that I just said, "Ah, f*ck it," and closed the computer instead of rewriting) but to give you a quick update, I AM SO HAPPY HERE. I MEAN, I'M REALLY, REALLY HAPPY. And I think living here and watching HGTV—both of these things combined—has made me realize that New York was just beating me down. I mean, the fireplace lady—yes, she's an idiot. But there's nothing wrong with wanting a dining room table. Why did I get so mad at that lady?

Since being here, at least once a day I ask myself why I have lived in New York for so long. (It's like I had Stockholm Syndrome or something.) CALIFORNIA IS AWESOME. It's like the promised land. It's sunny all the time and there are birds and flowers everywhere. I have space out here. I have a sofa on the patio out here. I HAVE A SOFA OUTSIDE. I haven't seen one rat since I've been here. But hummingbirds? THEY ZIP BY MY HEAD EVERY DAY. I am so happy.

I'm supposed to go back to New York in November, but truth be told, I'm not sure I will.

Performing at the International Dance Music Awards in Miami in March and launching her first music video for her club single <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_VcKTkY4Vk" target="_blank">"Inside Out"</a> are just two of Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter NiRé AllDai's endeavors since first stepping out as an artist. Her journey, which today sees her selecting songs — including tracks produced by Timbaland and the Stargate camp — for her upcoming debut album, actually began as a writer for other producers and artists."I've always been an artist," NiRé told MTV News. "But my manager was like, 'Let's work this [writer] angle,' and it worked well because I was able to build a lot of really great relationships with dope producers who ended up helping me on my project."<div class="player-placeholder right" title="NiRé AllDai Readies Debut Album" id="vid:789067" width="415" height="255"></div>"I did a first single for Starshell, who was Mary J. Blige's first artist, and the single was called 'SuperLuva' [produced by Fernando Garibay]," NiRé continued. According to rumors, the singer hit the studio with Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich.Fansite Propagaga was the first to share the news about the rumored musical collaboration, which is said to have taken place in the City of Angels. "Whitesnake guitarist, Doug Aldrich, was recording with Gaga today in L.A.," <a href="http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00052555.html" target="_blank">the site tweeted</a>. "@DJWS [DJ White Shadow] is rumored to have been in studio, as well."<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Lady Gaga Has The Title And Concept For Her Next Album" id="vid:717202" width="415" height="255"></div>A rep for the singer did not respond to MTV News' request for comment by press time, but the Mother Monster suggested on her own Twitter page earlier this month that she would be working with pal White Shadow on her next album.This is hardly Gaga's first dalliance with the rock genre. <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/flaming_lips/artist.jhtml">Flaming Lips</a> mastermind Wayne Coyne took away more than just <a href="http://pitchfork.com/news/46404-flaming-lips-blood-vinyl-10-copies-2500-features-keha-erykah-badu-nick-cave-chris-martin-blood/" target="_blank">a vial of blood</a> when he traveled to Nashville to record with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a>. (Though, really, you'd think that would be enough.) He also left with his first-ever tattoo ... not to mention a newfound respect for the wild-child pop star."Most of the time, if someone's willing to work with me, they're going to be a freak. And Ke$ha ... I sort of thought that she would be a freak, I'd heard about her and we'd tried to get a hold of her earlier," Coyne told MTV News backstage at the <a href="/news/articles/1685474/dave-matthews-band-hangout-fest.jhtml">Hangout Fest</a> in Gulf Shores, Alabama. "We showed up at her house, and she has a tattoo gun that she gives everyone a tattoo with, so within 20 minutes of being at her house, I had a tattoo on my toe; it's the only tattoo I've ever had."We were set to do this one song that I had prepared, and we went into the studio that night, and stayed there until about 2 in the morning, and did four songs, just making stuff up," he continued. "And the next day [we] worked for another couple hours. She's funny, she's gracious, she's imaginative, she's creative and she's a lot of fun to be around."The result of that collaboration (a song called "2012") shows up on the Lips' special Record Store Day double-LP, The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, a thoroughly out-there collection of songs and sound-collages that — as the title implies — the band recorded with the likes of Bon Iver, Nick Cave, Neon Indian, Yoko Ono and, uh, Coldplay's Chris Martin ... to name just a few. But will fans get to hear even more of the Flaming Lips/Ke$ha team-up? Well, Coyne certainly hopes so."We really loved making this music together — I think I've probably done six or seven songs with her — and I know a lot of her fans like ['2012'], but I don't know if we'll put more songs out there," he said. "She has other agendas besides doing music with Wayne, you know, but I hope so, because I think it's really great, crazy, unexpected music. And she, to her credit, loves what we do. She wants it to be whatever. She has no limits of what she wants it to be."And don't think the Heady Fwends sessions will be the last time Coyne and Ke$ha share time (or blood) in the studio. If anything, the Lips' recent output of, uh, non-traditional releases — songs encased in gummy skulls and fetuses, 24-hour noise-jam freakouts that <a href="http://flaminglipstwentyfourhoursong.com/" target="_blank">play for all eternity</a>, limited-edition vinyl filled with actual blood, etc — suggests Coyne and Co. are just getting started ... and they're going to get even weirder before they're finished."That's been the beautiful thing about all of these weird collaborations and projects; you work with freaks. Even working with someone like Chris Martin, he's very open to, like, 'Let's do stuff!' That's the great surprise about it," Coyne said. "I don't think people are surprised when we work with a group like Lightning Bolt or Neon Indian — people think of us as like-minded — but the surprising thing with the Chris Martins or the Ke$has, they're like us too, they just don' play music that sounds like that all the time."

Family and friends gathered privately in Atlanta on Friday (July 27) to lay to rest young Kile Glover, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher Raymond</a>'s 11-year old stepson, who died from injuries suffered in a tragic <a href="/news/articles/1689206/ushers-stepson-declared-brain-dead-after-jet-ski-accident.jhtml">Jet Ski accident</a> earlier this month.Glover was the son of Usher's ex-wife, Tameka Foster, and Atlanta TV executive Ryan Glover. He was struck by a Jet Ski while floating in an inner tube on Atlanta's Lake Lanier on July 6.There was no fanfare outside the Wieuca Road Baptist Church on Peachtree Road where the funeral was held, but inside, the Glover, Foster and Raymond families received tremendous amounts of support from many esteemed members of Atlanta's music and political communities. Ludacris, Jazze Pha and Phaedra Parks from "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" were just some of the celebrities in attendance. Nothing will stop the paparazzi from getting their shot, and it looks like they're paying for it — at least for Paul Raef, the photographer who dangerously <a href="/news/articles/1689184/justin-bieber-paparazzi-car-chase.jhtml">chased Justin Bieber</a> down Los Angeles' 101 Freeway last month.The Los Angeles City Attorney Office confirmed it will be filing four criminal charges against the 30-year-old photog. The highway pursuer potentially faces one year in county jail and fines up to $3,500. City attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan tells <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/333076/justin-bieber-paparazzo-charged-for-dangerous-chaotic-high-speed-chase" target="_blank">E! News</a> the freelance pap faces four misdemeanor charges, including following another vehicle too closely, reckless driving with the intent to capture pictures for commercial gain, reckless driving and failing to obey the lawful order of a peace officer.It's a less-than-surprising outcome for the high-speed chase, which landed the pop star a speeding ticket. According to Mateljan, the speedy paparazzo was driving his Toyota Rav4 at least 80 miles per hour as he attempted to chase down the 18-year-old's chrome Fisker Karma. Among one of the nearby drivers that had to stay clear of the chase was Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine. Describing the chase as "a very dangerous, chaotic situation," Zine says he was driving 60 to 65 miles per hour before Bieber passed him "in a careless, reckless fashion" and was eventually pulled over.Raef made use of Bieber's stop by speeding away from the scene but wasn't willing to give up so easily on the potential photo and continued to follow the singer only a short 30 minutes later, before Bieber made a call to 911 for help. Police found the photographer afterward when his license-plate number was spotted in a parking garage in downtown L.A. Days after the incident, <a href="/news/articles/1689221/justin-bieber-harassment-paparazzi.jhtml">Bieber filed a harassment complaint</a> against Raef, alleging the pursuer was acting "extremely aggressive" on the road.

And though he admitted he "appreciates" Gaga — who, it should be noted, is a fan and has even featured Manson on a remix of her hit "Love Game" — he's not about to add her to his Spotify playlist anytime soon. Though, surprisingly, he will jam some Kylie if the situation demands it."I like the general idea of what she's about. I have a hard time liking her music; it's just not the style of music I like," Manson said. "And I like a lot of music that is in that vein; I like Kylie Minogue sometimes ... I like Justin Timberlake over Lady Gaga, just musically."And while Manson was quick to add that he's not taking shots at Gaga, he did take issue with her ever-evolving look, saying he prefers to remain loyal to his roots."I prefer the Salvador Dalí approach, where you stick to one great thing that you're great at, and you do a lot of eccentric, different elements to your imagination. For me, I paint, or I'll do a movie or perform, but at the same time, I don't try to have a different look every single moment," he said. "I think it's more ephemeral, because people like to identify with one single thing; but I'm not one to knock her, she's obviously succeeded in what she's done."Still, as far as beefs go, this one is pretty tame, and Manson ended his diatribe by once again saying his only issue with Gaga has nothing to do with the Mother Monster herself; it's the music, pure and simple."It's not exactly the type of thing that I'd find myself listening to," he said. "That doesn't mean I don't like her."
