Justin Bieber, Usher Vie To Top Billboard Chart

Bieber's Believe enters charts just one week after his mentor's Looking 4 Myself, as Usher tells MTV News, 'We support each other.'

For the past several years, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> has been helping his protégé <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> become an international pop star. The pair have <a href="/news/articles/1673032/justin-bieber-usher-christmas-song.jhtml">collaborated on songs</a> and onstage, but now they are about to have their first battle — on the charts.Usher's album, <a href="/news/articles/1686990/usher-looking-4-myself-evolution.jhtml">Looking 4 Myself</a>, debuted on top of the <a href="/news/articles/1687847/usher-billboard-looking-4-myself.jhtml">Billboard albums chart</a>, becoming his fourth #1 album after selling 128,000 copies in its first week. But now it's Bieber's turn: Just one week later, Bieber will be entering the charts with his third studio album, <a href="/news/articles/1685471/justin-bieber-believe-track-list.jhtml">Believe</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1687988/justin-bieber-believe-album-sales.jhtml">early predictions</a> are expecting huge album sales.<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Do Usher And Justin Bieber Have a Friendly Competition For Record Sales?" id="vid:789781.id:1686957" width="415" height="255"></div>According to <a href="http://www.billboard.com/#/news/justin-bieber-kenny-chesney-headed-for-top-1007386952.story?utm_source=most_recent" target="_blank">Billboard</a>, Believe is on course to sell between 410,000 and 440,000 units, which would make it the year's biggest debut to date.Even though Bieber is on track to beat his mentor in sales, the R&B superstar isn't concerned.Regarding whether he and Bieber speak about topping each other on the charts, Usher told MTV News, "Actually, we have not had that conversation. We try to calculate when we release so that we support each other. It's like a seesaw: 'You take it this week; I'll take it this week.' "Usher also said that even though he and Bieber do not appear on each other's albums, he was still heavily involved in each song that made the cut on Believe."We talked about many different things when making his album. The coolest part about it is we support each other regardless if I'm on the album or he's on my album or not," Usher said. "Every album, it is that sit-down that we have to have, to go through this record. We talk about the audiences that are there: This song is for this audience member, this song is for this region. Madonna Targets Lady Gaga With 'Express Yourself'/ 'Born This Way' Mashup

Pop Queen's inclusion of lines from her 'She's Not Me' makes medley seem more like dig than tribute.

<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/madonna/artist.jhtml">Madonna</a>'s diva rivalry with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> may be taken up a notch when her MDNA tour kicks off Thursday at Tel Aviv, Israel's Ramat Gan Stadium. In <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ToQnu34QygU#!" target="_blank">new rehearsal footage</a>, the 53-year-old legend is seen singing a mashup of her "Express Yourself" and Gaga's "Born This Way" that concludes with a few lines from Madonna's copycat-shaming "She's Not Me."Last year, when Lady Gaga released her hit single "Born This Way," controversy erupted over the song's similarity to Madonna's "Express Yourself." (Never mind that much of the <a href="http://digitaljournal.com/article/317821" target="_blank">resemblance is rooted</a> in both songs' use of a pretty common disco chord progression.) At first, things seemed cool between the two singers. They'd always gotten along publicly, and <a href=http://www.popeater.com/2011/02/15/lady-gaga-madonna-loves-born-this-way/ target="_blank">Gaga told Jay Leno</a> that M's camp reached out to say all was well in the diva-verse with regard to the songs' similarities (something later denied by Madonna's people).<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Madonna - "Express Yourself"" id="vid:13328" width="415" height="255"></div>The whole thing appeared to have blown over until earlier this year, when Madonna was promoting her movie "W.E." and her Super Bowl halftime performance during an ABC News interview. <a href="/news/articles/1677260/madonna-lady-gaga-born-this-way.jhtml">Madonna was asked</a> what she thought of the comparisons, and in response she called Lady Gaga "reductive."Gaga's been pretty quiet throughout, but it's hard not to wonder if she'll stay that way once word of this latest swipe makes its way to her ears. (Gaga is currently in Asia on her <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/05/02/lady-gagas-born-this-way-ball-stage-biggest-ever-built-to-tour/">Born This Way Ball</a> tour, and she was recently forced to cancel a planned show in Indonesia after <a href="/news/articles/1685564/lady-gaga-islam-threat-indonesia-concert.jhtml">receiving threats</a> from fundamentalist Islamic groups in the country.)New leaked footage from rehearsals for Madonna's own road show showcases <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/05/14/madonna-mdna-tour-set-list/">a reportedly planned mashup</a> of "Express Yourself" and "Born This Way," and while the resemblance between the two songs remains as striking as ever, that's not the real story. Just those two songs layered together could have been fun: The two stars certainly have overlapping fanbases, who no doubt would have delighted in the winking acknowledgement of M's influence on Gaga. But Madonna complicates things by concluding the medley with a few lines from her Hard Candy track "She's Not Me," a song about Madonna being emulated by another woman.The inclusion of "She's Not Me" makes the medley seem like yet another scathing dig at Gaga. It's unknown whether Madonna was just goofing around during rehearsals or whether she plans to include that final digging refrain throughout her tour.Is Madonna taking things too far, or are we misreading things? Justin Bieber: What Comes After Believe?

MTV News has the scoop on Bieber's next single, fall tour and Mark Wahlberg movie.

Well, between supporting his album and a burgeoning film career, the pop star shows no signs of stopping.Bieber is still in the deciding process of nailing down just which track off Believe will be the next single, following up his smash hit <a href="/news/articles/1682090/justin-bieber-justin-timberlake-maturity.jhtml">"Boyfriend."</a> And when MTV News spoke to Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, he noted that there are several candidates from the album that seem like a likely follow-up release."We haven't picked the next single," he said. "We're gonna see how different songs react off the album. <a href="/news/articles/1687783/justin-bieber-big-sean-true-g.jhtml">'As Long As You Love Me' [with Big Sean]</a> is getting a lot of love, so is <a href="/news/articles/1686566/justin-bieber-ludacris-all-around-the-world.jhtml">'All Around The World' [with Ludacris].</a> So is <a href="/news/articles/1687838/justin-bieber-die-in-your-arms-michael-jackson.jhtml">'Die In Your Arms.'</a> 'Beauty and the Beat' is coming with the album. "The tour starts at the end of September ... by the end of 2013 we're gonna hit the whole world," he explained. "He has been watching a tremendous amount of Michael Jackson concerts from the '80s and '90s. And he has been talking to me about how Michael incorporated magic and pyro and reveals and he wants to bring in that. [But] still do that acoustic thing, but he wants to take it to a whole new level."It's just really exciting," he continued. "Nothing makes him happier than being onstage. So it's gonna be fun to get back onto the road. I think he was an amazing performer before, but his level of dance and musicianship and his range [has grown]. He's a veteran now. I think he wants to take it to a completely new level."Not only will Bieber stay busy in the music world, but Mark Wahlberg notes that things are also chugging along with their long-teased, in-the-works <a href="/news/articles/1687903/mark-wahlberg-justin-bieber-movie.jhtml">basketball movie</a>. The actor insists they are inching closer to a start date. And, Wahlberg is co-signing Bieber's acting abilities."Obviously, [Bieber] is a very good athlete. People have seen him on MTV; he can play. But I also really think he can act," he said. "There's not going to be any shortage of pushing him in getting that kind of strong performance out of him, if we get to make the movie. 'He just broke down, and he said, 'I can't do it anymore,' ' Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, recalls to MTV News.

It's not always easy being <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>. In fact, there has been a moment or two when the <a href="/news/articles/1687691/justin-bieber-believe-album-details.jhtml">Believe</a> singer had his doubts about embarking on a life of celebrity.He recently opened up to <a href="http://fabulousmag.co.uk/2012/06/18/justin-bieber-exclusive-interview-uk-girls-have-the-dirtiest-mouths/" target="_blank">Fabulous magazine</a> about questioning his life of fame after he found himself smack dab in the middle of a paternity scandal with a fan, Mariah Yeater, who claimed he fathered her child. He remained steadfast that he never even met the woman, and she eventually dropped her claim.But, as it turns out — according to Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun — when Bieber needed a pick-me-up and some convincing to stick to the music game another time, he looked to a pro athlete for some wisdom.<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Justin Bieber Nearly Quit Music Altogether" id="vid:793962" width="415" height="255"></div>"There was a show in Orlando, [Florida] ... It was a day where he had to make a decision if he was going to continue on or not, 'cause he was fighting," Braun recalled to MTV News. "We were in Orlando. We had a sold-out arena show, and it had gotten to a point where kids were surrounding hotels, and you're talking about a kid who is 15, 16 years old, and he went and did a show 20,000 people, sold out, but right before he went into the show, he was having a little bit of an attitude." (Bieber played Orlando on his My World Tour in August 2010.)"And he goes in the show, and he was fine, and he comes off, and I go, 'What was that before the show?' and he just broke down, and he said, 'I can't do it anymore. I can't go outside. I can't go anywhere ... I feel like a spectacle all the time.' And he was really struggling with it. You got to remember he didn't want to be a star: I found him, and it happened."Bieber and Braun had a major heart-to-heart as he struggled with his superstardom, but the teen did offer one suggestion on how he might be able to come to terms with how he was feeling. "So, we had a long talk about 'Is this what you want?' He sat there, got real quiet, he looked at me and goes, 'I want to meet Kobe Bryant.'"And I was like, 'Kobe Bryant? We just had this emotional conversation.' And he goes, 'No, I just feel like no matter what Kobe does, he'll always be chasing Michael Jordan's ghost, and someone the other day told me I could grow up in front of the entire world like <a href="/news/articles/1687838/justin-bieber-die-in-your-arms-michael-jackson.jhtml">Michael [Jackson]</a> did, and I just want to know how you handle always chasing someone's ghost that you'll just never going to be able to catch.' It was actually a pretty profound moment."Three weeks later, the encounter happened. How Justin Bieber Found His Hip-Hop Swag

Following the release of his hip-hop-heavy Believe, MTV News looks at the young pop star's swaggiest moments.

You'd think a 1995 collaboration between the King of Pop, Michael Jackson and rap's widely recognized G.O.A.T., the Notorious B.I.G., would have made a bigger wave, but when MJ released <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2w1KXE5QMQ" target="_blank">"This Time Around"</a> with Biggie Smalls 17 years ago, mixing pop with hip-hop was still very taboo. Despite the top billing, the track hit with a relative thud. The truth is it just didn't feel organic, it's not like Mike grew up listening to rap in Gary, Indiana. In the 1960s, the art form as we know it today just didn't exist.<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> was a 1-year old when the King of Pop snagged the King of Hip-Hop for a feature. And unlike Jackson, he grew up during an era when rap stars like Biggie, Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur were just as big as their pop counterparts — sometimes bigger. That's why Bieber mixes hip-hop so seamlessly on his new album Believe.<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Scooter Braun Knows Justin Bieber Is 'Authentic'" id="vid:793827" width="415" height="255"></div>"One, I think they know it's authentic and two, you got to remember Justin's past," JB's manager Scooter Braun told MTV News. "I was the vice president of So So Def Records and then I left and Justin was the second artist I found after Asher Roth. So here's this 13-year-old living in Atlanta, no one knows who he is, and he's just riding around with me and we're in the studio with Ludacris. We're in the studio with T.I. This may come as a surprise to devoted disciples of the Queen B, but according to producer Diplo, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a>'s 2011 single "<a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/beyonce/654804/run-the-world-girls.jhtml#artist=1236911">Run the World (Girls)</a>" actually started as "a joke.""I think a lot of people don't even realize where that song came from," Diplo told <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/17907948" target="_blank">BBC Radio's Newsbeat</a>. "That song never really had a push. It was a song we did, kind of like a funny, kind-of-a-joke song."<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Beyoncé - "Run The World (Girls)"" id="vid:654804" width="415" height="255"></div><a href="/news/articles/1664181/beyonce-run-the-world-girls-video.jhtml">"Run the World"</a> was released as the first single from Bey's much-anticipated <a href="/news/articles/1666507/beyonce-4-album.jhtml">4 album</a>, though it was met with a slightly <a href="/news/articles/1664218/beyonce-run-the-world-girls-video.jhtml">puzzled reaction</a> from some of her die-hard fans and failed to generate much heat on the charts, reaching only #29 on the Billboard Hot 100. Subsequent singles "Best Thing I Never Had" and "Love on Top" fared slightly better, going as high as #16.Of course, Diplo isn't actually credited as a producer on "Run the World" (that honor would go to The-Dream, Switch, Beyoncé herself and Shea Taylor), but he did snag a writing credit, thanks to the song's hefty sample of his Major Lazer track "Pon de Floor." But he did produce the 4 track "End of Time" and remembered the experience as a surreal one."We had to finish up a few records we were working with her on," Dip said. "That was super-weird, man. Like, I remember we were in the studio working with her and I still couldn't believe it."

Justin Bieber Nabs Year's Biggest Chart Debut With Believe

Bieber's latest sold more than 374,000 copies in its first week, edging Madonna's MDNA to claim the title of year's biggest bow.

Most <a href="/news/articles/1687988/justin-bieber-believe-album-sales.jhtml">predicted it</a>, and now it's official: Justin Bieber's Believe scored the year's biggest chart debut, selling more than 374,000 copies and blasting the competition on the Billboard Top 200.Believe — Bieber's fourth album to debut at #1 — slightly edged Madonna's MDNA, which sold 359,000 copies when it was released in late March, to claim the title of year's biggest bow, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's also the best first-week number any album has posted since Adele's 21 rode a <a href="/news/articles/1679279/adele-grammy-awards-2012.jhtml">post-Grammy surge</a> to sales of more than 729,000 copies in February.<div class="player-placeholder right" title="'Bieber Live'" id="id:1687833" width="415" height="255"></div>Bieber's album also sold nearly twice the copies as its closest competition, Kenny Chesney's Welcome to the Fishbowl, which opens at #2 on the chart with an impressive 193,000 copies in its first week of release. Usually that number is more than enough to take #1, but not this week. Fiona Apple's first album in seven years, <a href="/news/articles/1686557/fiona-apple-idler-wheel-btts.jhtml">The Idler Wheel,</a> debuts at #3, selling nearly 72,000 copies, followed by another returning alt icon, the Smashing Pumpkins, who sold more than 53,000 copies of their <a href="/news/articles/1687831/smashing-pumpkins-oceania-billy-corgan.jhtml">Oceania</a> to take #4. The "Rock of Ages" soundtrack rounds out the top five, selling nearly 49,000 copies.<a href="/news/articles/1687847/usher-billboard-looking-4-myself.jhtml">Usher, last week's chart champ</a> (and Bieber's mentor), is in at #6 with his Looking 4 Myself album, which sold 48,000 copies in its second week. Adele's aforementioned 21 lands at #7 (more than 47,000 copies sold), followed by One Direction's Up All Night (more than 41,000 sold) and Luke Bryan's Tailgates & Tanlines (nearly 28,000 sold). Rush's Clockwork Angels closes out the top 10, selling nearly 27,000 copies.Other debuts on the chart include the Dirty Heads' Cabin by the Sea, which opens at #18 with sales of nearly 18,000 copies, "Once" star Glen Hansard's Rhythm and Repose (#21, more than 16,000 copies sold) and the soundtrack to Pixar's "Brave," which bows at #33, with sales of nearly 12,000 copies.And while the story of this week's Billboard chart is unquestionably Bieber, next week could be a different story. He'll face challenges from both Linkin Park's <a href="/news/articles/1688422/linkin-park-living-things.jhtml">LIVING THINGS</a> and Maroon 5's <a href="/news/articles/1688438/maroon-5-overexposed.jhtml">Overexposed,</a> both of which could make his reign a short-lived one.
